How to Save on Gas Prices in 2022

Read Time:4 Minute, 5 Second

With so much going on in the world already, its hard to take these heavy hitting gas prices with a smile. If you are like me you may work part time or full time while creating a business in your spare time. So if you have been diriving anywhere you definitely have noticed the sky rocketing gas prices. Here are 5 tips to help you save some money at the pump.

1. Join Store Reward Programs and Play Their Little Games

Many gas stations and companies have their own proprietary apps that allow you to rack up points to get free items and regular discounts. If it’s a big name gas station like 7 Eleven, Murphy’s USA, or Circle K they for sure have their own apps and sometimes a 3-5 cent discount. In addition to this, they also sometimes run games for a week or month, where you win free items, gas discounts like .30 cents off or you just strike out.

2. Yes Join a Grocery Stores reward Program or Annual Membership

Now grocery store rewards programs are known to give you discounts on food, but now many stores have gas stations like the local Harris Teeters or Krogers here in the southeastern US where I’m from. At the pump you can enter your phone number or scan your card to receive usually a 3 cent discount off the pump price.

3. Use Partnerships and Credit Card points

Now for those who may work mainly gig apps or do some on the side in addition to work you have found couriers such as UberEats or Amazon Flex provide gas discounts or a small amount rebate that builds with each gas purchase. This can come in handy when you are driving around on weekends or after work doing some gigs.

Also credits cards do something similiar where they allow you to rack up a 2-6% cash back rate on certain purchases. Some may even offer more points for spending in a certain category during the money like entertainment. So if you already have credit cards, I do no recommend applying for any unless you are rolling in money and will basically funnel the money right back on to the card after purchases.

4. Fill Up Your Tank for it to Last Longer?

When I was younger always remember my mom telling me to stop letting my gas run low and fill the tank because it lasts longer anyways. Now on bare observation I can say my gas lasts longer when I fill my tank but I’m also comparing that to putting all of $15 in on a near daily basis just to get to where I need to go for the day.

Now if we look into this statement scientifically where the rumor comes from is the thought that when the weather is cooler, than the heat in your car’s parts, it creates a condescension effect. So basically small traces of your gas evaporates and having a full tank makes it harder for that to happen.

So even if this myth isn’t true, filling up will save you trips to the pump and in turn spending on extra snacks inside the store. You’ll also rack up points quicker and you’ll miss those gas pump spikes we sometimes see for 3 days or so before it temporarily drops back down.

So the verdict? Tru..ish

5. Fill Up in Outskirt Towns but Be Safe

If you live in a major urban, metropolitan or capital you may notice you tend to have higher gas prices in the area. I pretty much consider the gas near my uptown city, luxury priced. So what I do is wait until I have shopping, work or even leisure time to drive to a smaller outskirt town that has lower gas prices.

Now ofcourse I have certain standards when doing this because I feel no amount of money is worth my safety. First I will not drive a ridiculous amount of miles because the $3 you save on the pump price being .20 cent less you will lose on the drive there. At that point you might as well buy the higher priced gas near you.

If the gas station is too delipidated or has a comically unknown name, I may pass on it because some gas stations dilute their gasoline to make a dollar stretch. Also I am careful about the locale and culture of a gas station. If it seems to have drug users that are allowed to loiter or boisterous clientele I will skip that gas station altogether no matter how well lit or cheap the prices are.

So just remember be safe if you decide to fill up at very cheap gas stations.

Hopefully these 5 tips will help you on saving some money at the gas pump. Don’t let these gas prices get you down.
